Access to data

Concerns have been expressed that certain types of research are less likely to lead to information being provided than others. There is a need for government agencies to see it as part of their public accountability responsibilities to facilitate the provision of information to bona fide researchers.

Good data sets are important in promoting and supporting high quality empirical research. A range of views have been expressed as to the adequacy and utility of existing data, but at the very least, perhaps there needs to be an improvement in the co-ordination and information-sharing about available data sets. There is also the potential to encourage or facilitate access to existing sources and/or build on existing surveys rather than 'reinventing the wheel’.

    What is the current
experience of gaining access to data, and how could this be improved? What practical barriers prevent researchers gaining access to the data they need and what are the implications of this?

The issues so wisely addressed are common to all information sources maintenance, from organisational to governmental. For dozens of years the developed countries are trying to implement E-Governance and some are more successful than the others. The problems within stay the same how to store securely, provide access and keep updated. The research on this theme may help us out here too.

This is so much true! Even while browsing the net one can find very trustful sources and very informative, at the same time one should manage to find these among the scam and rubbish information all around!

Gaining access to data is difficult from non governmental sources, since all kinds of data is guarded jealously by many organizations, even though it may be mundane. The bad publicity related to data theft has meant that it is really difficult to get access to real data from non governmental organizations.

    Hi everyone
I think the net is a great source of information ( I mean the things that you look for to learn more and get deep in one specific subject)but when it comes to data or vita information it all boils down to how much you are willing to pay for it.
It amaze me how some of you really important data that you should have the right to access is managed and provided by commercial com. that will charge you fee to disclose this data
Sade but it is true it is all about money

I guess this topic can be quite debatable depending on on where you stand on the topic. Level of skills to access data can has a very wide range of variation.

It all goes back to. What do you want to do for yourself and what do you want your government to do for you?

Interesting infomation on data accessability. I think access to personal data in particluar should be free and easily available to an individual (such as credit reports etc), and not be managed by companies (for profit) who would charge you to access your very own personal data.

I think there are several problems why the researches have no access to the required information: first, there are lot of information resources that are still undigitalized (shame on us!); other (digitalized) resources are not categorized – thus being not accessible and other very precious resources are so much secured, that no one can get access to.

Dear Nick, I share your opinion and also find some anonymous replies also up to the issue. I am sure IT will make the access to information possible and easy soon. It is already a magic how we get to know each other by means of internet the more time pass the better it becomes! Hear from you soon.

It is very hard to discern right from wrong on the net. I was trying to write and article the other week and did some research from a what I thought was a reputable source...guess what, I was wrong.

  17. that's why you have to be careful what you read and listen to on the net. Just like wikipedia, all the info on that site isn't true and facts.

I am fortunate to be in a city with two universities with a complete research library at my disposal. Some of the leading inline research databases are still lacking in their accessibility though and I would like to see the data more readily available to the average scholar.
